My old Elantra beat a Honda Civic in a race. How is that possible?

I could hear his engine roaring and he was way behind me. I didn't add anything to my hood or anything. I thought it was pretty funny because he had the spoiler and everything and I didn't have anything. The civic was a 2010 or so by the way. It looked fairly new.
