What type of car is safe for a first time driver?

I am 23 and just got my license. To most that is old to just get your license, but I am originally from New York and I never needed it before. I am looking into which car to buy and I'm torn between a Hyundai Sonata or a Nissan Altima. I asked friends but they recommend a Toyota Camry or Honda Civic. Now I'm even more confused. I will be moving to LA soon, so I plan on buying the car when I get there. Which car do you think is better for a first time driver? Thanks in advance.
