Is my honda civic worth what I payed and does it have potential?

I just bought a honda civic 1998 off craiglist for 1300. Its has 17k miles on it and has some problems. My friends were telling me to be careful when buying off craiglist especially hondas because they get stolen alot. How would i know if they car was stolen? Also do you think it was worth the money? It is clean on the exterior and inferior, only problems are it needs a oil change,o2 sensor fix,a new exhuast, and a new battery. I bought it for my first car and wanted to use it to learn stick. How much will it cost me to buy and have all these issues installed?
