How to wire a push button to my ATV?

Hi there I have a 2001 Honda 300ex. I need to wire up a new push button, but everytime I try to wire the button, it smokes and fries the wires. I m wiring it directly from the solenoid to the button. I don t know what size wire to use. Anyone know what size electrical wire to use and also how to directly wire it? Is there a certain push button I need to use? It s a 12 volt ATV battery. (To those who say just order a new OEM starter switch I can t do that I don t have $150 for one.)
