Truck won't start without ether?

Hey guys, I'm trying to find a winter beater because obviously I can't drive my classic Camaro or my Honda CBR in the winter. Found a shitty old truck with the floors kind of rotted out, but he's asking for $1,000 which is in my price range. I looked around before coming here but I couldn't find a straightforward answer. He says the truck runs great but requires a shot of ether to start. Why is this and how could I fix this problem so I don't have shoot it up every time I start?
