Cylinder 3 misfire on my 2003 Honda Civic LX?

I drive a 2003 Honda Civic LX (the specifications are standard). A check engine light recently popped up on my car a few days ago and the heat gauge shot up real high (after about 10-15 minutes it would drop back down to normal levels). I took it to a shop to get it checked out and the guy working there said that it was a cylinder 3 misfire (code P0303).
Could anyone explain why the heat gauge shot up? How long can I drive it in this condition? Is the cause due to lack of tune-up?
