Do I need a new transmission for my automatic 1998 Honda Civic Dx?

When I put my car into reverse using my cars dash board it dosent move it just revs up but when I put my car into reverse using just the gear stick handle thing it actually reverses an goes back. Am I having a problem in my transmission linkage? Or do I need a new transmission
